Favorites

Crit is over, it was rough with a capital ROUGH, but i am starting to actually process a lot of what was said (and not said). Will talk more about that later. Right now i am putting together my submission for RISD's awards of excellence so i thought i would finally post some shots of the painted photos. Here's a handful of my favorites. They are all 4x6, original prints, with acrylic. I'm realizing just how different they are on a screen, the texture obviously plays a big part in the experience.

Paulie, if you are reading this -- it is because i love you! right?

i havent read all the comments on your diary -sorry blog:) but i would be curious to know how you feel about other people buying/owning these painted pictures. I mean, you can be detached from the person you paint out, but are you detached from the work? (just curious). BTW, i think this series looks good on screen. You should find a way to mount the best ones on foamcore or somethin.

hey zeze, the strange thing with these is that they were started in responce to various faculty telling me i need to get more "personal". But i am not more attached to this work than any other work i've done...their preciousness comes from the scale, not the people depicted or that they were my possessions. In fact, as i may have told you already, i stopped doing photos of people/animals/cars who have died, or even people i actually knew, and it didn't make much difference. However, i am realizing it doesn't make a difference to anyone, in that they are all assumed to be my family/friends. So trying to make them universal did not work. Onto plan W.
Also, most of them are dry mounted to a thin board, to make them more object-like but still maintain the photo handle-ability.

Thanks Martin, i appreciate it, especially since it's hard getting people to talk about the Eva Hesse work. I think i just need to do more.
